Well, said Pooh, what I like best, and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didnt know what it was called. A.A. Milne The First Day: The big day finally arrived my first day at my new job. So, all of that worrying for nothing. The train wasnt late and I didnt oversleep. I arrive in my new building and my first stop is security. They scan my briefcase (who knows for what), give me a security pass and off I go. Im greeted by my new managers admin who promptly takes me to my new desk which, unfortunately, is right outside of my managers office (but, no worries). My desktop computer is already setup and my new network password must have been taken right from the Bourne Identity (who could possibly remember this?). But thats okay, because Im given about ten other totally different system passwords that I will never remember. My manager stops by and gives me a quick tour of the office. Im introduced to about 25 people (I know I wont remember any of their names and I may even get their names confused with my new passwords). On to the important stuff like showing me the coffee room, cafeteria and of course the Mens Room. Before I know it, it is time for me to get my security pass and Im off to the basement of the building. While Im waiting for the security pass guy to figure out how to get my information into the computer he snaps my picture (unbeknownst to me). My building pass picture looks like it should be hanging in the Post Office with the other 9 most wanted criminals. Lunch time comes and Im off to the state-of-the-art company cafeteria. The food looks really good and is reasonably priced. So I wind up eating a very large lunch (but thats okay, its my first day). Back to my desk where I see theyve left a pile of new hire paperwork that must be completed. The benefits guide is 50 pages long (okay, 20 of those pages list doctors in the plan). Lots of choices medical plans, dental plans, vision plans, life insurance, disability insurance and my personal favorite accidental death and dismemberment (and right after lunch!). My large lunch is starting to catchup with me and I could really use a nap, so 1 or 3 cups of coffee later, its back to the paperwork. No way I can possibly read the entire 180 page compliance manual, so I will take a leap of faith that it is substantially the same as the compliance manuals Ive read at my (many) previous jobs. The day flies by and it is 6:30pm before I know it. No one is making a move to leave, but my manager stops by and says I should leave early while I can (early?).
