Making the Most of Manchester for Postgraduates Getting Better at Connecting University of Manchester Careers Blog

Making the Most of Manchester for Postgraduates Getting Better at Connecting University of Manchester Careers Blog Yesterday I presented a 1 hour session on Making the Most of Manchester â€" 6 (and a bit) things postgraduates can do in their own way and their own time to (paraphrase the philosopher H D Thoreau), er,   squeeze the marrow out of living, studying and possibly working in Manchester. One of the 6 and a bit things I stressed the most, much to everyone’s chagrin judging by the nervous giggles, was connecting.   Networking.   Getting to know people.   Making friends.   As the introduction to this excellent video by The Atlantic on “Talking to Strangers” points out “connected communities are critical to the health of individuals and societies.” Why don’t we like talking to strangers? (see below) Even if we like it, is it possible to get better at it? (yes) Can we learn to like it? (to some extent, it’s important to try) Does is mean you have to be one of those backslapping, gregarious types whose extrovert energy lights up an entire room? (definite no). Yesterday we looked at some of the reasons people ‘hate’ talking to strangers We are shy or introverted â€" or both. It’s important to distinguish between shyness and introversion.   Although they are not the same thing, they are also not mutually exclusive either as this insightful article by Susan Cain discusses. Related to shyness, we may have anxiety either mild or acute related to meeting strangers.   The Counselling Service offers workshops and other support if you recognise some aspects of social anxiety in yourself and would like to make some changes. Maybe we’ve had a bad experience with an unhelpful stranger, or we were feeling poorly or unprepared.   Emotion is a powerful teacher; a negative experience makes a strong impression and it’s not surprising that it might lead us to avoid situations where such things might happen again. Perhaps we feel vulnerable because of our language skills.   As I related yesterday, I struggle to communicate verbally in languages where my reading and writing is perfectly fluent.   Intent on making a good impression and not embarrassing myself, I lose the thread of conversations because I’m trying to formulate a perfectly grammatical response to something someone said five minutes ago.   Some advice for becoming a more confident second (third, or fourth language speaker:   “What’s the worst that can happen if you screw up in front of someone? Nothing!” and Great insight for the humorous and the introverted. If it is a formal opportunity to meet strangers, such as a conference, seminar, careers fair, or networking event, we can experience pressure to ‘perform’ to make a good impression.   This always reminds me of Elizabeth’s remark to D’ Arcy at the Netherfield ball in Pride and Prejudice: “We are each of an unsocial, taciturn disposition, unwilling to speak, unless we expect to say something that will amaze the whole room, and be handed down to posterity with all the éclat of a proverb.” Other people report that pressure comes from a belief that connecting with others is all about securing a job.   Seeing networking in that light makes it awkward and unpalatable for many people. So if it’s not about performing to impress or getting a job offer, what’s the point? Why bother? What are the benefits? Information Ideas Raising your profile, building a reputation Learning Be mentored…or mentoring Work/business contacts Friendship Romance Yes. You read that last one correctly. And why not?   It’s a completely legitimate if often overlooked benefit of networking. [And, since yesterday, even some (slightly dodgy, for a couple of reasons) data to back it up.] But what if people are rude and do reject you? Believe that if people are rude and do reject you, the vast majority of the time, it’s them not you.   Maybe they are having a bad day, received bad news, are stressed, are themselves anxious about meeting strangers. You don’t have any control over how people respond to you, but you have absolute control over how you respond to them. Don’t take it personally, particularly if they are a stranger â€" how could you take it personally? They don’t even know who you are! If you can stand the thought of it, and remain objective, try politely to find out why.   Sometimes, particularly under pressure and duress, or anxiety, people may not realise the impact of their behaviour. There are habitually rude people in the world, sad to say.   Who knows how they got into the habit, but you can’t force someone to change their behaviour.   The best response to those people is to be polite and move on. In situations where it is ‘you’ (maybe you are having a bad day, have had bad news, are stressed, etc.), remember it’s not really you â€" it’s your behaviour, and you can change that.   Use it as an a opportunity to learn about yourself and grow. How can you get better at connecting? 1.       In addition to the Talking to Strangers video, watch How to work a crowd by Alexis Bauer, a humorous approach to getting better at networking 2.       Try one of these ‘choose your own adventure’ approaches to learning networking skills 3.       Read and reflect on the resources in this article.   Make a personal plan for how to improve your approach to connecting with others. 4.       Seek advice or use others as a sounding board for your ideas. 5.       Create or take advantages of available opportunities to meet people. If I could learn to get better at it, you can, too. All Postgrad-highlighted Postgraduate networking postgraduate

Recruitment Profiling The Hogwarts Way

Recruitment Profiling The Hogwarts Way (Warning: to anyone who has never read or watched the Harry Potter series, this post may not make much sense. Go and have a biscuit instead.) Everyone who knows the Harry Potter series knows the Sorting Ceremony, where first year students are sorted into their school houses by the Sorting Hat, an ancient and powerful magical artifact. When placed on your head, it reads your mind and decides which of the four houses you would best belong to. There are numerous ‘sorting hat’ widgets online that tend to ask you a few questions and then assign you a house, but can this be turned into a viable typology for recruitment profiling? Let’s find out! Gryffindor You might belong in Gryffindor,/ ?Where dwell the brave at heart,/ ?Their daring, nerve, and chivalry/ ?Set Gryffindors apart (Rowling, 1991) By: Anna N The Sorting Hat tells us that Gyffindors are brave and willing to take risks, bending the letter of the law but never the spirit. Gyffindors are quick to seek out opportunities and have the nerve to take a risk, because often it will pay off. Even when threatened with danger they keep a cool head and their eye on the prize, just as Harry did in his second year during a Quidditch match. Despite being chased by a rogue Bludger determined to kill him, Harry stays focused on the game, catches the Golden Snitch and wins the match, even though he breaks his arm in the process. Whilst bravery and daring-do are desirable traits in employees, those looking to hire Gryffindors must manage them effectively and curb their more risky endeavours, for your protection and theirs. After all, no matter how noble the intention, does it really make sense for your employees to wander willy-nilly into a metaphorical nest of giant man-eating spiders? Suitable roles: Entrepreneur, Business Consultant, Team Captain Hufflepuff You might belong in Hufflepuff,/? Where they are just and loyal,/? Those patient Hufflepuffs are true/ ?And unafraid of toil (Rowling 1991) By: Isaac D F Hufflepuffs are the worker-bees of any organization. They are not renowned for their intelligence, but they make up for this in hard work and loyalty, as well as strict adherence to the rules. Hufflepuffs take work seriously and invest time in socializing and making friends. Just like Gryffindors, they have a strong sense of justice â€" Cedric Diggory gives Harry a clue to solve one of the Triwizard Cup challenges, after Harry helped him out in an earlier round. Loyalty and hard work are desirable in any business, but an employer shouldn’t count on Hufflepuffs to be leading the way in bringing about innovation and change. Instead, let them do what they do best â€" put their heads down and get on with it. A word of warning: although Hufflepuffs are friendly, their loyalty is primarily to one another and this can cause them to close ranks, possibly even leading to labour disputes. Things got pretty ugly when the Hufflepuffs felt that Harry had stolen their moment of glory during the TriWizard Cup, after all. Suitable roles: Factory Worker, Retail Assistant, Call Centre Operative Ravenclaw Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,/ If youve a ready mind,/ ?Where those of wit and learning,/ ?Will always find their kind (Rowling 1991) By: zigg13pra Ravenclaws are the thinkers, the dreamers, the geeks of any organization. Alone of all the Houses, their common room is not protected by a password, but rather by a Turing-style Test of intellectual questioning, which requires intellect, logic and lateral thinking to pass. If you get the answer wrong, you’re not allowed in until you get it right â€" how else do you learn? Ravenclaws pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge and love to come up with new theories and ideas, although these may not always be practical. Intelligence and creative thinking are rightly valued in any organization, but the employer should be aware that the Ravenclaw does require careful management. They need the creative freedom to think and dream and assemble ideas in their heads, but they also need to be kept in the real world. Luna Lovegood has various theories about numerous undetectable magical creatures that can cause various ailments, but when she and her father went to Sweden to find the Crumple-Horned Snorcack, they came back empty-handed â€" a waste of productivity and organizational resources. Suitable roles: Scientist, Software Engineer, Concept Designer Slytherin Or perhaps in Slytherin/? Youll make your real friends,/ ?Those cunning folks use any means/ ?To achieve their ends. (Rowling 1991) By: ace-angel Slytherins are a difficult lot. They aren’t stupid â€" far from it â€" nor are they cowardly, as popular thinking would suggest. They are instead careful; a Slytherin won’t get into a fight he doesn’t feel confident of winning. Slytherins take a more amoral approach to the world, acting in their own best interests and assuming that others will too. This may mean they won’t play according to the spirit of the game. In Harry’s second year, the Slytherin Quidditch team becomes highly successful after a generous ‘donation’ of seven Nimbus 2001 brooms, the fastest brooms in the world. Here, expenditure on technology compensates for lower talent. This shows a willingness to explore different approaches to achieve their goals, and the quality of their brooms certainly gives them a competitive advantage. Acting in self-interest can be a positive for a business, as long as the employee’s self-interest is matched to the business, which means the employer has to be careful to manage their motivation. Again, a note of caution â€" Slytherins will do almost anything to achieve their ends, and this includes backstabbing and trickery. Harry was almost tricked into detention after Draco Malfoy challenged him to a midnight dual, and then set him up to be caught. If you catch an employee in a compromising position and another employee is standing nearby smirking, you might have to ask a few questions. Suitable roles: Insurance Salesman, Investment Banker, Recruitment Consultant Obviously the above is a bit of fun, but it does highlight the risks of the use of personality profiling tools that are very common in the business environment today. Current thinking on personality and identity suggests that identity is multi-faceted, fragmented and entirely contextual: who we are depends on where we are, whom we are with and the situation we are in. Assuming, as Hogwarts does, that at the age of 11 (or 16, or 21, or 35) we can definitively chart someone’s identity and career for the rest of their lives is very dangerous. However, there are numerous tests and tools out there, such as the Morrisby Tests or the Myers-Brigg profiling tools, that assume just that. Lastly, we should consider Conformity Theory, which suggests that people tend to act how we expect them to act. Maybe the Slytherins aren’t all evil, but because we expect them to be, that’s how they turn out. There’s an important lesson here: treat your employees with respect and assume that they will work hard, and they are more likely to do so. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to comments on any and all errors I have made in the Harry Potter mythology.

The New Job Chronicles - The First Day! - CareerAlley

The New Job Chronicles - The First Day! - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Well, said Pooh, what I like best, and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didnt know what it was called. A.A. Milne The First Day: The big day finally arrived my first day at my new job. So, all of that worrying for nothing. The train wasnt late and I didnt oversleep. I arrive in my new building and my first stop is security. They scan my briefcase (who knows for what), give me a security pass and off I go. Im greeted by my new managers admin who promptly takes me to my new desk which, unfortunately, is right outside of my managers office (but, no worries). My desktop computer is already setup and my new network password must have been taken right from the Bourne Identity (who could possibly remember this?). But thats okay, because Im given about ten other totally different system passwords that I will never remember. My manager stops by and gives me a quick tour of the office. Im introduced to about 25 people (I know I wont remember any of their names and I may even get their names confused with my new passwords). On to the important stuff like showing me the coffee room, cafeteria and of course the Mens Room. Before I know it, it is time for me to get my security pass and Im off to the basement of the building. While Im waiting for the security pass guy to figure out how to get my information into the computer he snaps my picture (unbeknownst to me). My building pass picture looks like it should be hanging in the Post Office with the other 9 most wanted criminals. Lunch time comes and Im off to the state-of-the-art company cafeteria. The food looks really good and is reasonably priced. So I wind up eating a very large lunch (but thats okay, its my first day). Back to my desk where I see theyve left a pile of new hire paperwork that must be completed. The benefits guide is 50 pages long (okay, 20 of those pages list doctors in the plan). Lots of choices medical plans, dental plans, vision plans, life insurance, disability insurance and my personal favorite accidental death and dismemberment (and right after lunch!). My large lunch is starting to catchup with me and I could really use a nap, so 1 or 3 cups of coffee later, its back to the paperwork. No way I can possibly read the entire 180 page compliance manual, so I will take a leap of faith that it is substantially the same as the compliance manuals Ive read at my (many) previous jobs. The day flies by and it is 6:30pm before I know it. No one is making a move to leave, but my manager stops by and says I should leave early while I can (early?).
