American kids would rather be youtube blogger
American kids would rather be youtube bloggerAmerican kids would rather be youtube bloggerImagine the guts, the glory, and finally the awe of floating in space after years of studying and training. But according to a recent survey, American kids today have no interest in being an astronaut. Theyd rather be a YouTuber or a vlogger.A Harris Poll survey commissioned by LEGO surveyed 3,000 children in the United States, UK, and China about their future .Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe children were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up and given five professions to choose from astronaut, professional athlete, teacher, musician, or Youtuber/blogger.Twenty-nine percent of Americans and 30% of those in the UK wanted to be a YouTuber/vlogger at three times the rate they did an astronaut. For American kids, astronaut was the least-popular future profession.Meanwhile, 56% of k ids in China wanted to be an astronaut, with Youtuber/vlogger coming in last on the list.Still, kids showed that they were nevertheless imaginative about our future in space. Almost all of those surveyed (90%) said theyd like to learn more about space exploration. When asked if they would like to travel into space, 95% of Chinese kids said they would, and nearly 70% of U.S. kids and 63% of British children did.Nearly all kids from every country surveyed China (97%), the UK (87%), and the US (88%) believe that humans will travel to roter planet in the future. A quarter (24%) of kids who think humans will travel to Mars think it will happen either this year or next. Thats a pretty fast timeframeThree-quarters of kids believe that humans will live in outer space or on a different planet, though kids from China fervently believe so, (96%) at a much higher rate than kids from the US (66%) and UK (62%).Perhaps by the time that happens, some of todays American and English kids will be broa dcasting their YouTube channels straight from space.

Avoid these Five Employer Branding Mistakes to Reach Top Talent
Avoid these Five Employer Branding Mistakes to Reach Top TalentAvoid these Five Employer Branding Mistakes to Reach Top TalentAvoid these Five Employer Branding Mistakes to Reach Top TalentThe word is outemployer branding is a powerful way to reach todays information-hungry talent. But it turns out thats not all it can do. Employer branding actually helps motivate job seekers to act.post-apply survey data shows that applicants put a high value on three components of an employer brand, including a companys reputation, the information they provide and their values. All three are factors in why seekers applied for the job.If your company still struggles with mastering your employer brand, dont worryweve got your back.To help avoid the same obstacles that other companies face, weve outlined five common mistakes that businesses often make in their employer branding efforts and provided some strategies for how to overcome them.Mistake 1 Touting unique perks without understanding what candi dates really wantpost-apply survey data found that applicants rank work-life balance as a top priority. Yet that benefit is often no longer enough. More and more employers are attempting to differentiate themselves by offering unique employee benefits such as indoor rock climbing walls, free snacks and even private concierge services especially when trying to recruit Millennials. This could be a good strategy for some employers if theyve done their homework and are starting with a strong employee value proposition (EVP). But for many, its simply an off-brand Band-Aid.Thats because Millennials may enjoy those perks, but theyre hardly their top priority. According to a survey by Grovo, Millennials are looking for companies that offer autonomy, communicate effectively, provide training and professional development, give them the opportunity to do meaningful work, and make innovation a core company value. Why this happensWhen trying to quickly recruit new employees, especially highly ski lled ones, flashy perks are a easy tactic. And with many other companies offering them, it often becomes a case of keeping up with the Joneses. Yet implementing an uncommon perkjust for the sake of touting it on career sitesis likely to only achieve a temporary bump in job applications. While offering housecleaning and in-house espresso bars can certainly get attention, the verdict is out on whether they will inspire the right candidates to apply to and stay with your company. What to do insteadDevelop an employee value propositionor EVPto better understand the main reasons your best employees want to work for you. That starts with asking your employees for their input, rather than deciding in a conference room absent any real data or evidence.Once youve defined what employees get out of working for your company, use this knowledge to create a succinct statement that communicates your EVP. From that point on, align it with any new perks. When youre thinking up new perks, ask your emplo yees for their feedback. Those discussions will help you identify ideas that both enhance your employees lives and boost their productivity at work. That way youll implement perks that matter to your employees and attract the right candidates.Mistake 2 Keeping benefits info hush-hushTodays job seekers often shop for their next role much like they shop for a new car, and that includes using research in their job decision. Job seekers increasingly expect to be able to find information on the benefits offered by prospective employers. Unfortunately, most companies keep their lips sealed when it comes to the benefits they offer. Why this happensEmployers have a variety reasons for keeping their benefits packages vague until an offer is extended. Some employers likely know that their benefits package could be better. Some employers may simply be unaware that job seekers are looking for this information, particularly in the job description. Whatever the reason, a veiled approach to benefit s can be a missed opportunity with job seekers. What to do insteadIf you already offer killer benefits and have the green light from legal to show them off be aya to include detailed benefits information on your careers site. Better yet, consider creating a separateand publicone thats dedicated solely to your employee benefits. If your benefits are ho-hum, or if you dont have the permission to share them explicitly, consider getting more personal by creating a content campaign in which current employees share stories about how their employment benefits have positively impacted their lives. No matter which strategy you go with, you need to start referencing your benefits in job descriptions and recruitment content ASAP.Mistake 3 Neglecting to highlight real employeesand their workHave you ever heard someone talk about how much they like their job without hearing about their co-workers? Neither have we. Job seekers want to know the people theyd work with, what these people think about th eir work and how they affect the companys culture. Too few companies go this route and their recruiting suffers as a result. Why this happensMany employers dont realize how effective showcasing the everyday lives of current employees can be. As a result, they dont invest in creating content that accomplishes this. But doing so is a great way to help job seekers envision themselves in your offices. What to do insteadHumanize your workplace. Create content that highlights your own people and their work. Even if you dont have budget for a video tour of your office, you can still ask great employees to guest blog about their work on your career site blog.Mistake 4 Creating content but not promoting itProducing great recruiting content is an important stepbut keep in mind that its just the first step. Many employers publish recruiting content on their career site but then neglect to put a distribution strategy in place. Why this happensEven seasoned marketing teams are sometimes guilty of i nvesting heavily in the creation of content without allocating some budget to promote and distribute it. notlage only does this hamper your ability to recruit great talent, youre also doing your teams efforts a disservice. Without promotion, your content is likely to underperform, simply because no one knows its thereWhat to do insteadWhen you plan your next piece of recruitment content, include a marketing strategy for how and where youll promote itbeyond your own career site and blog. Consider setting aside funds to distribute your content to target audiences.Advanced targeting options will help your job ad reach the people you most want to attract. This can be a good time to collaborate with an experienced recruitment partner like to better target your job ad to the right audienceor getting it out on job sites where people are when theyre looking for jobs.Mistake 5 Missing out on employee brand ambassadorsYour own satisfied employeesparticularly top performerscould be your best t ool for attracting more candidates with similar attributes. Empower your brand ambassadors to promote your company as an employer of choice. Too many employers overlook this valuable resource. Why this happensSome companies still fear what could happen when their employees outwardly represent them, especially on social media. But with a little trainingand a little trustyour employees can be a powerful weapon in your recruitment arsenal. What to do insteadStart by communicating (or creating) a company social media policy. Include positive ways and rallying points for employees to share and promote your brand. You can even consider reaching out to some of your best and happiest people to get the ball rolling. Check out how Booking.com employees share their experiences and how the company promotes them. These lessons will enable your company to find its unique employer brand voice. And rememberEmployer Brand solutions can help you accelerate the process and attract the talent you need.

Robots are taking over company job interviews
Robots are taking over company job bewerbungsinterviewsRobots are taking over company job interviewsThe future has arrived Robots are now smart enough to judge us. And because some employers have decided that technology is the solution to their recruiting problems, Americans are starting to field generic job questions posed to them by no one. These artificial intelligence and recorded interviews have a lot of positives. They circumvent traditional human limitations such as work hours so interviewees can schedule an interview at their convenience. And when programmed correctly, AI can weed out some of the implicit biases that recruiters have, meaning that companies can recruit a mora diverse labor force. But according to potential candidates, the new interview techniques also have major downsides. It seems across the age spectrum, people find one-sided interviews to be cold, odd and difficult to ace. Why its happening The U.S. labor market is facing a shortage of qualified candidates for many industries, and a low unemployment tarif means there are fewer people actively searching for opportunities. In this environment, companies have identified the need for speed to recruit the best people for their offices. But businesses are not only looking for great candidates theyre also eager to diversify their workforce. LinkedIns 2018 Global Recruiting Trends report found that diversity was the top trend shaping the future of recruiting and hiring. Reasons for the trend include improving culture and company performance and better-representing customers. With these aims in mind, companies are looking for technology to streamline their application processes while getting rid of implicit biases that often hurt more diverse candidates. One company has experienced a 5- to 7-day improvement in the time it takes candidates to complete a phone interview after implementing on-demand voice interviews, according to The Wall Street Journal. Thats likely because applicants can choose any time for their interview and are not subject to the saatkorn confines of having to speak with a hiring manager during office hours. Robots are also more inclined to give a less traditional candidate a chance if theyre right for the job. They do not step into the same pitfalls as humans, who can sometimes judge applicants on their attractiveness, the way they dress, shared interests or connections and other factors. But even robots are not perfectly impartial after all, people create them. Amazon reportedly had to retire an AI recruiting system in 2015 because the bot was giving women lower scores than their male counterparts after being programmed to identify candidates similar to Amazons mostly male hot shots. So while the new technology may make the recruiting process more efficient and give hiring managers more time to complete important work, it also has its downsides. And thats before considering the impact on the people who are now being interviewed by robots. The reactio n It turns out that not everyones on board with having their application processed by a non-human. Its highly impersonal, Jeremy Maffei, 42, told the Wall Street Journal. He said during his automated interview, he blanked out and had no way to know whether his answers were resonating. 23-year-old Eden Hoffman was asked to do a video interview with a robot that scored her responses through an algorithm. It was very unnatural, Hoffman told the New York Post. Im a big people person when Im in front of someone, Im using my hands and making eye contact. Its awkward when youre just doing that for yourself. When Darlene Racinelli had an automated phone interview, she hung up before it was over.I hit 9 and just ended it, Racinelli told the Journal. No one knows if new technologies will be the long-term solutions to companies fraught recruiting processes, or if they will go out of fashion as candidates complain about how impersonal and unnatural they are. But for now, they have become part of the job interview process, and its time to be ready for a call from a robot.

We tested buying incentivized mobile app installs to quickly surge on install volume and measure how this affected organic results. Incentivized ad model rewards the user for installing our app and we expect lower user quality as a result. However, incenti vized networks is cheap and a great way to drive scale. The idea is that if we surge in install volume using cheap paid sources, our organic ranking in the app store will rise. This will lead to higher quality user installs for free. We learned that were able to see 25-35% lift when we deploy an incentivized strategy and it gives us the same cost efficiency as a non-incentivized campaign strategy. This also highlights the analytical approach we have with marketing and why were looking for data-minded people to join the team. What would you tell candidates has been the most exciting part of your job? Why should they come to Glassdoor?Tracy Pan Youll be working for a company with a great mission helping people find jobs and companies they love. Youll feel challenged in your job. Why Your Resume Should Focus on Your Recent Work
Why Your Resume Should Focus on Your Recent WorkWhy Your Resume Should Focus on Your Recent WorkExplained Why We Eliminated Your Earlier Work ExperienceThere are so many nuances when it comes to writing an effective resume for todays market that its hard for anyone other than a trained professional writer to keep track. Between the evolving needs of employers and their growing reliance on recruitment technology, resume writing has become both an art and a science. In this series, our goal is to explain some of the common changes resume writers make and why they are in your best interest. Why your earlier work experience was cut outYour writer didnt forget to include your earlier positions in your resume, we promise. They were removed for a good reason. While there are some resume-writing rules that professional resume writers like to debate, the overwhelming majority agree that a resume should only include the last 1015 years of employment. There are exceptions to this rule, of course (Ill explain further below). However, generally speaking, the standard cut-off for old information on a professional resume is 1015 years.Explaining the 1015 year cut-offThere are three main reasons why professional resume writers tend to eliminate or, at the very least, truncate a job seekers earlier experience beyond the 15-year markGives employers exactly what they wantThe further along you are in your career, the less relevant your earlier work experience becomes. Employers care fruchtwein about the details of your recent work that tie back to the position theyre currently filling not the jobs you held 15 or more years ago. By focusing on the parts of your recent experience that demonstrate your qualifications for the job, youre giving employers exactly what they want the Cliff Notes version of your work history, rather than the novel.Helps achieve the optimal page lengthThe average recruiter spends less than 10 seconds reviewing a resume before deciding whether an applicant is worth further consideration. When you have so little time to make the right impression, its important that you stick to the two-page resume rule. Removing the jobs that fall outside of the 15-year window helps achieve this optimal page length that recruiters prefer.Combats age discriminationWe may not like to admit it, but the fact remains Age discrimination is a reality in todays job market. By eliminating your earlier work history or minimizing its details, were helping to shift recruiters attention away from your age and toward what really matters the value you have to offer a prospective employer.Exceptions to the 1015 year ruleThere are a few exceptions to this rule, of course. For example, if youve worked at the same company for more than 15 years, if youre pursuing a job where the listing specifically requires the candidate to possess more than 15 years of experience, or if youre working in an academic or scientific field, your writer may elaborate on some or all of your e arlier work experience.Recommended ReadingHow to Skillfully Combat Ageism During a Job Interview6 Ways You Can Overcome Ageism During the Job SearchHow to tischset the Stage for a Successful Job Search

Innovative Interview Techniques for Small Business Hiring
Innovative Interview Techniques for Small Business Hiring Innovative Interview Techniques for Small Business Hiring Innovative Interview Techniques for Small Business Hiring Fenn Small companies thrive on teamwork, shared values, and collaboration. This can be true especially when it comes to how to interview candidates. So when a CEO slips up and makes a bad hire, everyone suffers. Thats why it makes sense to make absolutely sure that every employee not only fits the skill set youre seeking to fill, but brings the right energy to your corporate culture.Sure, youre familiar with all the tried-and-true interview questions, but are they working for you? If your company seems to have sprouted a revolving door when it comes to retaining employees, its time to get creative. Here are a few interview techniques from savvy company owners: 1.Look for Patterns. Aaron Patzer, who sold his online personal finance company, Mint.com, to Intuit last year for $170 million, swears by an interview method called topgrading. Topgrading looks to identify the longterm patterns in human behavior by always asking the why rather than the what., I had one guy say he left job because he didnt get along with boss, recalls Patzer. And then he said he left the next job because his boss was kind of a jerk. So you say, wait a minute, maybe it wasnt your boss maybe its you! Patzer says topgrading was over 90 percent effective in identifying people who worked out and worked well, at Mint.com. The method involves asking candidates detailed questions about success, failure, decisions, and key relationships in every full time job theyve held, in chronological order. 2.Involve Your Staff. Eric Shiffer, owner of CEA Business Solutions in Montgomery, AL, says that he sets aside a good portion of the interview for the person to interact with current staff. I will introduce them and then leave the room for 15-20 minutes or so. Its not only an opportunity for employees to evaluate a prospective co-worker, but a chance for the candidate to ask questions about the owners management style. If the staff noted some things that I did not see and they were really against hiring the person, no matter how much I like them I would not hire them, says Shiffer. 3.Test Critical Thinking. Whenever Tom Szaky hires a new employee at Trenton, NJ-based TerraCycle, he always asks the same question: If you move into a new market, and you have a negative $10,000 budget, how do you break even? When vice president of public relations Albe Zakes first interviewed at the company, which makes consumer products out of waste materials, he was initially thrown off balance by the question.I stumbled through some answers and then said this is a tough question, can I email you with some answers? Tom told me later that he liked the fact that I didnt give up.So its not the answer to a tough question that matters its how a prospective employee reacts to a challenge, and the process that they use to come with a solution to a thorny problem. 4.Tease out Behavior. At Meathead Movers in San Luis Obispo, CA, brute strength alone wont get you a job.Co-founders Evan and Aaron Steed know that every employee at their moving company will reflect the brand that they have worked so hard to establish. So when he hire, we gauge character, says Aaron Steed.Prospective employees are told ahead of time to come to their interview in a collard shirt and to make absolutely sure theyre on time. If they dont, then they dont get hired, says Steed. Likewise, Barry Steinberg at Direct Tire Auto Service in Watertown, MA asks his interviewees to show up at 7am because thats typically when customers start dropping off their cars at his company. If the candidate makes a poor early-morning impression, theres no chance of being hired.

Making a few bone-headed decisions in your 30s? Itâs a learning experience. But falling behind at your age, though not uncommon, should be a wake-up call. The older we get, the less time we have to make up for past mistakes. Itâs like sailing in the wrong direction; if you donât right the vessel sooner or later, youâre not going to find yourself a long way from your port of call.I reached out to three experienced financial professionals to get their thoughts on where forty-somethings most frequently slip up. Hereâs what they had to say.1. Not talking about money with your kidsThereâs a reason that a lot of adults like yourself never developed much financial acumen â" itâs not exactly a focal point in the American educational system.âOur schools do a great job of teaching STEM and English, but we donât teach our kids about money,â says Christian Wagner, president of Penn Investment Advisors in Yardley, Pennsylvania. âThat leads to a lot of proble ms.âAnd these are problems that could cost you in the future, because young adults who arenât financially literate can overspend and under-invest.Fewer than half the states require high schoolers to take even one economics course, and only 17 mandate that they take a class in personal finance. So itâs up to parents to pick up the slack. It starts by teaching kids the value of a dollar. By the time theyâre five, you can start having them earn money around the house and pay for candy or Lego sets at the store, says Shannon McLay, CEO of The Financial Gym, a New York City-based money coaching business.âWhen theyâre teens you can start discussing household and vacation budgets and how you create them,â she says. âIf you really want to be open with them they can help you create the household budget or have them help you budget for the next family vacation.â2. Failing to think critically about collegeWeâre taught from an early age that college is the ticket to success and a high-paying career. The part thatâs left out: how much student debt can hamstring them for years after they earn their diploma.Last year, the average college student graduated with nearly $30,000 in loans. With the dizzying pace of tuition increases, itâs not hard to imagine that figure creeping up even more by the time your kids reach college age.Not everyone needs to go to an expensive university right off the bat, especially if they donât know what career they want to pursue. âThere are lots of ways to pay for higher education,â says Wagner. âThe one that I think is the greatest is to go to a community college for two years,â says Wagner. âTheyâll get the core courses they need anyway, and then they can move on to another school.â Opting for a more affordable track can also relieve the burden for moms and dads, who often take on burdensome loans to help their kids get an elite education. âThese parent loans have been the source of a lot of peopleâs problems,â says Wagner. 3. Putting college savings before retirementYes, the cost of college in the U.S. is high â" like, crazy high. But if your solution is to divert funds into a 529 at the expense of your own retirement account, you could be in for a lot of heartache down the road. âItâs a horrible mistake,â says Wagner. âIâve never heard of a retirement loan, but Iâve certainly heard of a student loan.âThe better approach is to concentrate on your retirement accounts first, taking advantage of their long-term growth potential. Once youâve hit your goals there, you can start fortifying their college account. For some parents, it might make more sense to delay your financial assistance. âYou can help them with paying off the debt after college if you want to contribute, but only if you feel prepared for retirement,â says McLay.4. Keeping up with the JonesesAs parents, we like to give our kids the best, whether itâs the latest video game console or a whirlwind trip to Disneyland. But thereâs a danger in conflating spending with happiness, and itâs a line of thinking that experts say too many adults sink into. For Wagner, social pressures play a big role. âPeople get a fear of missing out,â he says. In order to keep up with the neighbors, thereâs a tendency to pull out our wallet for big-ticket items regardless of whether or not you can afford them. The irony is that spending money like a rap star usually doesnât do a whole lot for your relationship. What it does lead to is a financial mess. âPeople are carrying way too much consumer debt,â says Wagner. But itâs not only lavish vacations or expensive gadgetry that are stretching our budgets, says McLay. Often, itâs overdoing it with baseball leagues and camps that end up costing a boatload of cash. âYou should have conversations with them and have them prioritize their favorite activities,â says McLay.And itâs okay to have your kids pitch in, especially when they get a little older. âYour teen can help contribute for these, either by doing more chores at home or financially,â says McLay.5. Going into debt for your carsIn our society, cars are as much a status symbol as a means of transportation. But thereâs a price to be paid for borrowing huge sums to drive around in the latest Benz. Going for something more modest may not give you cachet â" but itâll certainly give you peace of mind. The ideal is to create a strategy so you donât have to borrow at all for your vehicles, says Michele Clarke, an advisor with St. Louis-based Acropolis Investment Management. A married couple may start out with two car loans, she says. But when you pay off that debt, you should continue making those same-sized payments into a savings account. You can then tap those funds to pay for any car repairs you need, and eventually use the rest for the down payment and sales taxes on the next car. âEarn interest saving for a car, rather than paying interest borrowing for a car,â says Clarke.6. Carrying mortgages into retirementItâs not uncommon to buy a larger house as your family grows or relocates. But you should always make it a goal to avoid mortgage debt by the time you retire, says Clarke. As you buy new properties, make sure your home loan matures before your target retirement date. As you build equity in your house, roll it into your next purchase, says Clarke. If you find that you canât afford the payments unless you stretch the duration of the loan, itâs a sure-fire sign that you bought a house beyond your budget. 7. Not tracking smaller expensesWith mobile apps like You Need a Budget and Mint, thereâs no excuse for parents not be documenting how much they spend each day â" especially when theyâre not swimming in money like Scrooge McDuck. And yet, many parents donât. Clarke says being aware of where your cash goes tends to keep you focused on more valuable outlays, like retirement savings and family outings, rather than impulse buys that you donât really need.Accountability is especially useful when it comes to eating out, one of the most common budget-busters. Clarke has a tip to avoid restaurant-binging: Use your phone to make a note of meals you prepare at home. Each time you eat in and itâs a winner with the family, she says, grab your device and add it to your list of favorites.âYou can feed a family of four for $20 or less,â says Clarke. âGoing out to eat costs twice that, easily, and adds up.âThis article originally appeared on Fatherly. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

The Essential Elements of an Electronic Press Kit (EPK)
The Essential Elements of an Electronic Press Kit (EPK) The Essential Elements of an Electronic Press Kit (EPK) In the music industry, physical press kits have almost completely been replaced by the electronic press kit. The EPK, as it is known, is a traditional promo package in a digital form that lives on a band or band managers website. Musicians can create their own EPKs using free programs and widgets and may also house them on hosting sites like SonicBids and ReverbNation. Whats Included in an Electronic Press Kit (EPK) An electronic press kit should always contain the musicians biography and details about releases. It can also include press photos, videos, upcoming tour dates, backline requirements and other marketing information. All the content on EPKs is downloadable media meant to provide the reader or recipient with all information the necessary to include in a program, review, or article. Here are some things you should think about including: Biography and Discography: Also called a backgrounder, the bio grabs a readers attention and communicates the musicians style or genre. Unlike a traditional resume designed to attract an employer, the bio is a narrative peek into a bands artistry and gives readers a taste of the groups influences and sound. A separate discography section features a list of available recordings.Samples of Your Music: EPKs naturally include samples of music. Sometimes they showcase a variety of reels with snippets or complete tracks to appeal to different audiences including fans, clients, promoters, and presenters. Your Performance Calendar: Building an audience is critical to every artist, and a list of gigs and performances is a critical component of every press kit. The calendar should be revised and updated often.Stage Plot: For musicians playing at venues, festivals, or shows featuring more than one act, the stage plot gives the stage crew and sound engineer critical setup information about mics and inputs. Giving a venue access to these details prior to a gig can help a show run smoothly and avoid hassles the day of the performance. Photos of You and Your Band: Pictures also help to tell a musicians story in addition to the music. EPK photos may include headshots, band and promotional shots, CD cover art and liner graphics.Videos of Your Best Performances: Promotional videos give fans and prospective fans the opportunity to watch a live performance. They also provide reporters and other media outlets with shareable material to post.Your Press Coverage: An EPK also shows off press coverage including reviews and interviews along with endorsements from radio and television outlets. If You Like: Just like Amazons if you liked that book, try this one, a musicians if you like section in an EPK mentions other bands and artists that might be of interest to a like-minded audience. This is especially useful for venues seeking an opening act or for those that have cultivated an audience with specific tastes.Your One Sheet: An EPKs one sheet summarizes and distills its essential information into a single page; its often used to promote the release of an album like a press release. Your Contact Information: A band dropped out of the Grammys and Clive Davis is calling to ask you to perform tomorrow. Contact information thats front and center is an EPK essential. Clive only calls once! Using EPKs for Press In general, electronic press kits are considered a welcome change in the world of music promotion. EPKs can handle more information in a user-friendly format than physical press kits. They are also easier on the budget as production costs are kept at bay with no print production and no postage required to send them. But all musicians and band managers should be aware that not everyone you wish to target with a press package will be open to receiving EPKs. Some simply prefer the traditional hardcopy, so be sure to find out the preferences of the people you are contacting.

Internship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees
Internship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees Internship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees Internship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees Childers With more companies competing for the best talent, its never been more important for businesses to create a solid internship program to attract the next generation of corporate trailblazers. Across industries, interns are hired with an eye toward cultivating future staff and recruiting college graduatesto the corporate world. Are you looking to start your own successful internship program? Consider these best practices from companies whose internship programs are deeply integrated into their corporate culture. Setting a High Bar for Interns All of our hiring managers interview and assess internsin the same manner as potential full-time employees, says Marie-Therese Ellis, University Relations manager for Brocade, an industry leader in high-performance network solutions. In addition to hiring college juniors and seniors for summer internships, Brocade recently introduced an internship program where students can work on a part-time basis for 8-12 weeks during the school year. Provide Interns with Guidance Jawbone, a world-leader in consumer technology and wearable devices, requires internal teams who request interns show they have the time and dedication to create and help drive a meaningful project for the student. This includes assigning a manager and a mentor, weekly one-on-one meetings with the intern to monitor progress and celebrating milestones, says Drew McGuire, head of University Programs at Jawbone in San Francisco, Calif. Recruit Wisely As the process for recruiting talented interns has become more competitive, companies are utilizing a variety of strategies including social media, networking, and college recruitingto attract students. We look for interns who demonstrate initiative, an eagerness to learn, a willingness to work hard and who show the potential for leadership, Ellis says. Often its hard to distinguish those qualities on paper, so a face-to-face interview is key. Jawbone forgoes the traditional college career fairs, preferring to attend campus Hackathons and other student-led activities to recruit interns. Hold Orientations and Training A successful intern program should provide plenty of training and supervision. We have a kick-off reception for our interns where one of our executives discusses our corporate culture and the expectations we have for our employees, Ellis says. In addition, they attend the same orientation as our full-time employees. At Brocade, weekly social and professional network meetings are held where interns hear from executives in different departments. As a result, interns gain a better understanding of the overall company. AllowInterns to Contribute Providing your interns with meaningful work gives them the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to your company. Ellis says that Brocade interns work on projects that have the ability to influence company processes, and receive constructive feedback from their manager and team, as well as a mentor for extra guidance and support. We have many interns who come up with innovative ideas and deliverables during their internship that are immediately implemented into the company, Ellis says. At the end of their internship, students give a company-wide presentation, showing what they accomplished during the program, McGuire says. Plan Activities That Go Beyond Work Social perks are another draw for companies who are hoping to lure top students to their companies as summer interns. They also serve to ensure that students have an enjoyable and memorable internship experience. In addition to being paid at the same market rate as Bay Area technology companies, both Brocade and Jawbone offer interns the same benefits and perks as full-time staff, including vacation pay. Most interns receive health coverage through their parents plans. At Jawbone, interns are invited to attend the same company-wide events, parties, celebrations, and sporting leagues, as the companys 450 staff members, including social and networking events including scavenger hunts, Giants baseball games, and picnics and barbeques, and a speaker series. In 2014, the company held their first Intern Product Design contest, where interns were asked to brainstorm and pitch a new product idea to a panel of employees. The winning team was given tickets to the Outside Lands concert event in San Francisco. Interns and your Talent Pipeline If your company plans to use the internship program to drive new graduate hiring, use evaluations from managers to assess whether the intern would be a good match for your company. At minimum, be sure to maintain contact with the student and make a job offer as soon as possible, since many of todays students receive multiple job offers upon graduation. Throughout the internship experience, both Jawbone and the intern are able to assess if this is the right place for them to begin their career after they graduate, McGuire says. High performing interns are automatically considered for new graduate positions, and we often create new positions just to hire them.

How can we better prepare the next generation of leaders
How can we better prepare the next generation of leaders How can we better prepare the next generation of leaders As Simon Sinek once said, âLeadership is not about the next election - itâs about the next generation.âAs the leader of a company, youâre responsible for steering the ship. Youâre tasked with shaping the companyâs vision, and you assume responsibility for its fate. For some, doing this alone may seem preferable - but itâs not sustainable. In fact, as your company grows, one of your most important jobs will be identifying and preparing its next generation of leaders - those who can help turn your ship into an armada and ensure that your long-term vision for the company remains intact.Itâs not easy, and the steps required wonât always seem comfortable or intuitive. But itâs critical to your companyâs ultimate success.Hereâs how you prepare the next generation of leaders to be ready to take the wheel.1. Identify candidates with leadership potentialBefore I joined Aditya, I worked for a man named Krish, who remains my role model to this day. Almost everything I know about leadership, I learned from him. He taught me the importance of taking responsibility and of showcasing empathy when working with others. He also taught me what leadership traits I should look for in employees Iâm considering for leadership roles. Iâve since corroborated his advice with my own experience.Hereâs what I look for in candidates when considering whether or not they have leadership potential: He or she shows interest in taking on responsibility. The first thing I look for in potential leaders is whether they are inspired to lead and are enthusiastic enough about the work to want to take on more responsibility. Becoming a leader entails taking on more responsibility; candidates for leadership have to prove they can handle that. He or she is comfortable working with other people. It is not enough to be enthusiastic or smart - potential leaders must also be empathetic, patient, and inspiring. If I see an employee who dominates group projects or proves uninterested in helping others understand the âwhyâ underlying the work, I know he or she wonât be a good fit. He or she listens to other people. Often, people with the enthusiasm, grit, and intelligence required of leadership are also convinced that they know best. This is counter-productive. As a leader, you learn the best solutions and ideas often come from those around you. If you canât listen to other people, youâll limit your potential effectiveness and deflate your teammatesâ investment in their jobs. These traits comprise a baseline. If a person youâre considering as a potential leader doesnât possess them, you can assume they wonât be a good fit.2. Give candidates responsibility, but with boundariesLeadership is not something that can be taught in a classroom. It is developed over time. The only way for potential leaders to learn how to lead is to give them some tempered responsibility - meaning you as the head of your company or team need to learn when to let go.First, try giving your candidate ownership over a short project or small team. Help them understand what youâre trying to achieve by giving them this responsibility, affirm their autonomy, and let them know itâs okay if they fail. This will ensure they have the creative freedom required of transcendent leadership as well as the confidence required to take risks. Then, see how they do.Now, if it turns out that your candidate really doesnât have what it takes to lead â" say they miss a deadline or sour client relationships â" take the wheel back for a little bit. Help your candidate understand what they did wrong so they can improve in the future.Worst-case scenario: you gradually release the candidate back to what they were doing before. But if they showcase encouraging potential, now you know they have what it takes to move on to the next step.3. Allow candidates to assemble and manage their own teamThe last step in grooming future leaders is giving them full autonomy on a large project, or in managing their own large team. If they succeed in doing so, you know you can trust them with continuing your companyâs vision. There are a few key things to watch out for on this step. The first is that your candidate puts together their team with equanimity and appreciation for diversity. This means setting politics and personal loyalty aside and focusing solely on picking the best people.Often, first-time managers will fill out their teams with people they are friends with or whose involvemen t is politically expedient. This is not in the best interests of the company and should serve as a red flag that that person is not ready to assume larger responsibility.Additionally, once their team has been assembled, your potential leaders should prove themselves comfortable delegating responsibilities and granting creative autonomy. An essential element of leadership is getting the most out of the people around you. Dominating every task or completing every project yourself achieves the opposite. Moreso, it proves that that person canât handle the power that comes with leadership.Grooming leaders in this way requires an almost superhuman amount of patience.Youâll need to accept that the people you train might do things differently than you. And youâll have to accept that the process takes time.My mentor, Krish, worked with me for years before I was ready to lead a company on my own. I worked with my current head of marketing â" a deferential ex-military man with lots of pr omise but a fear of risk â" for months before he felt confident enough to be creative on his own.But as the captain of your ship, the time and energy you spend grooming future leaders is one of the smartest investments you can make. In fact, itâs an investment you have to make if you want to protect the integrity of your companyâs vision and purpose.Deepak Reddy is the Vice Chairman at Aditya Educational Institutions (2009-present)This column was originally published on Quora.com.

Congratulations Letter Examples for a New Position
Congratulations Letter Examples for a New Position Congratulations Letter Examples for a New Position Sending a note of congratulations to colleagues when they hit big milestones, such as a new job, is a great way to keep in touch and strengthen a connection. You should send a personal congratulations letter to former co-workers or current colleagues who are leaving for a new position at a different company. Receiving this type of note lets people know that you are thinking of them. Plus, sending your best wishes and congratulations is good manners and a nice gesture. Sending Congratulations on Landing a New Job Follow the tone and voice that you would typically use in correspondence with this connection - if you are writing to a former manager, your tone may be slightly more formal than if you are writing to a current co-worker who accompanies you on daily coffee breaks. If you are sending the note via email, your subject line can be Congratulations or Heard the Good News or something along those lines. Even though the note is a casual, personal congratulations, make sure that your spelling and grammar are correct, and avoid abbreviations and emojis. While this person is a friend, they are also a business contact, and in this context should be accorded the respect an associate deserves. Remember that your network is a key asset in your career trajectory, and making a good impression with all your colleagues will always be beneficial. What Information You Should You Include in Your Note The note doesnt have to be formal or complicated. The main thing that you should communicate in the letter is your heartfelt congratulations. If you are sending the note to a current co-worker, its appropriate to mention how they will be missed at the office. You might take the opportunity to mention some of the projects you have worked on together, and some of the successes you have shared. Let them know that you are happy they have a new opportunity and wish them all the best. If youre sending a note to a former colleague, and you havent been in touch recently, you may want to let them know where and how you heard the news about their new position. You can say, I saw on LinkedIn that you got a new job as account director over at Hayes and Burnes, and wanted to reach out to say congratulations. Your note is a good chance to reinforce your relationship, and you could also take the opportunity to suggest meeting for coffee to hear the details of their new position, and offer your support. You should make sure that you include your current contact information, and that you have theirs. Sending a Card Most often, a congratulations letter to a colleague for a new job will be sent through email, but sometimes sending a card through the post is appropriate. Especially today, when so much correspondence is read on a computer screen, a handwritten card can provide a personal touch to your sentiments, and may make your good wishes stand out from others. If you go this route, make sure your handwriting is legible, and as always, that your punctuation and grammar are flawless. New Job Congratulations Letter Example #1 Dear Evelyn, I was thrilled to hear about your new job with the Yankee Company. I know its been a long search to find the right position, but it seems like this is going to be a good match for your skills and experience. Im looking forward to hearing all about it soon! When you have settled in, I would love to take you out for a coffee to catch up on everything. Best of luck with your first days in the new position. Fond Regards, Josie New Job Congratulations Letter Example #2 Dear Dahlia, Congratulations on the new position as Director of Finance at Woodstein Burns! This is such a wonderful opportunity for you. Our loss will be WBs gain, and I know youll do such a fantastic job over there. Im sad to see you go, and Ill certainly miss our Monday morning coffee runs, but feel certain that youre making the right choice accepting this position. Lets keep in touch, please! Im eager to hear how the new position treats you. Wishing you all the best, Marcusmarcusj12email.com123-555-1212

How a Supervisor Can Manage Employee Absenteeism
How a Supervisor Can Manage Employee Absenteeism How a Supervisor Can Manage Employee Absenteeism In 2017 the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) estimated that almost 3% of an employers workforce was absent on any given day. The high price of absenteeism affects organizations, even more, when lost productivity, morale and temporary labor costs are considered. What continues to be of most concern is that almost two out of three employees who donât show up for work arenât actually physically ill. For most companies, the responsibility for managing absenteeism has fallen primarily on immediate supervisors. These supervisors are often the only people who are aware that a certain employee is absent. They are in the best position to understand the circumstances surrounding an individualâs absence and to notice a problem at an early stage. Therefore, their active involvement in the companyâs absence procedures is pivotal to the overall effectiveness and future success of the absence policy or program. To ensure that supervisors are comfortable and competent in their role of managing absenteeism, they need to have the full support of senior management. All parties must be aware of the aim of absence policies and procedures. Should there be discrepancies between departments; a policy can lose its effectiveness. To provide more consistency, supervisors should be trained in their responsibilities about managing absenteeism, advised how to conduct effective return-to-work interviews, and educated in the use of disciplinary procedures when necessary. The Responsibilities of the Supervisor In addition to ensuring that work is appropriately covered during the employeeâs absence, there are a number of other critical actions that supervisors need to take to manage absenteeism. They should: ensure that all employees are fully aware of the organizationâs policies and procedures for dealing with the absence,be the first point of contact when an employee phones in sickmaintain appropriately detailed, accurate, and up-to-date absence records for their staff, (e.g., date, nature of illness/reason for absence, the expected return to work date, doctorâs certification if necessary),identify any patterns or trends of absences which cause concern, conduct return-to-work interviewsimplement disciplinary procedures where necessary. The Return-to-Work Interview The training of supervisors in how to best manage absenteeism should include instruction on how to conduct effective and fair return-to-work interviews. Recent national surveys indicate that these interviews are regarded as one of the most effective tools for managing short-term absenteeism. The return-to-work discussion will enable the supervisor to welcome the employee back to work, in addition to demonstrating managementâs strong commitment to controlling and managing absenteeism in the workplace. The interview will enable a check to be made that the employee is well enough to return to work. The necessary paperwork can be completed so that the absence and its conclusion are properly recorded. The fact that an established procedure is in place to investigate and discuss absence with an employee may, on its own, act as a deterrent for non-attendance for disingenuous reasons. Interviews need to be carried out as promptly as possible following the absenteeâs return to work (no later than one day after his or her return). The employee should be given ample opportunity to outline the reasons for his or her absence. The supervisor should use the interview as a time to explore any issues that the employee may have which are leading to absence. The goal is to foster an open and supportive culture. The procedures are in place to make sure that help and advice are offered when needed and to ensure that the employee is fit to return to work. Employees will usually appreciate the opportunity to explain genuine reasons for the absence within a formalized structure. Should the supervisor doubt the authenticity of the reasons given for absence, he/she should use this opportunity to express any doubts or concerns. At all times, the employee must be aware that the interview is not merely part of company procedures, but a significant meeting during which the absence has been noted and may have implications for future employment. The companyâs disciplinary procedure, in the event of unacceptable levels of absence, should be explained to the employee. At no point during the meeting should the interview become a form of punishment, but should be seen as an occasion to highlight and explain the repercussions of absence within the department. The vast majority of employees derive a sense of pride and achievement from their work and management should be encouraged to treat these individuals as responsible adults. Recommended Disciplinary Procedures if Absenteeism Continues The following guidelines outline the recommended steps to be taken in cases where short-term absences are considered to be above an acceptable level in a particular period of time. Stage 1: Counseling Interview The immediate supervisor should advise the employee of his concern over the absences, try to establish the reasons for the sickness and determine what needs to be done to improve attendance. If any medical condition is identified at this stage and is likely to have an effect on job suitability, the supervisor should arrange an appointment with a company-approved doctor. This should be confirmed with the employee in writing within five working days.If from the discussion, the problem does not appear to be due to an underlying unfitness for work, the supervisor should advise the employee that, while the recorded ailments may be genuine, a sustained improvement in attendance is expected or the next stage in the procedure will be taken. A review of the attendance will automatically be made each month for the next six months. Stage 2: First Formal Review (Verbal Warning Stage) If the employeeâs absences continue to worsen following analysis and regular monitoring, he should be invited to attend a formal review meeting with the supervisor. The absence record should be detailed in a letter inviting the employee for this interview. The employee should be advised that she is entitled to be represented by a union representative or a colleague as appropriate. The purpose of this meeting will be to:continue to discuss the underlying reasons for the absences, advise the employee of the service and cost implications of her absence, andwarn the employee (except when deciding to seek medical advice) that if there is not a substantial and sustained improvement, her employment may be terminated because of her inability to maintain an acceptable attendance level. This constitutes a verbal warning. Where medical attention is warranted, action must be taken immediately. The meeting is therefore only adjourned to allow this part of the process to be completed. Within five working days, the employee must receive medical advice. The meeting is then reconvened with HR and the doctorâs opinion is discussed. If the doctor confirms fitness for work, the employee should be warned about the consequences of continued absence. Stage 3: Second Formal Review (Written Warning Stage) Regular monitoring indicates that no improvement in the absence pattern has occurred, a second formal meeting will be arranged with HR.The letter inviting the employee to the meeting will include the absence record and, again, advice on representation.Any new information given at the meeting regarding ill health or a change in the nature of sickness may need to be assessed by a company-approved doctor. The employee should be given the opportunity to explain his or her absence record. If appropriate, the supervisor should inform the employee that a formal written warning is being issued and that this warning will remain in the employeeâs file for a specified period. A copy of the warning should be issued to the employee and to his/her representative. The employee should be informed that failure to comply with the companyâs attendance expectations and to improve on the present unacceptable record of absence, will result in the termination of the employeeâs employment.Where fitness for work is in doubt, proceed with redeployment options according to the guidance received by the doctor. Consult with the employeeâs union representative (if applicable) on the redeployment process and options. Stage 4: Temporary Suspension From Work If following the implementation of the previous stages of the disciplinary process, no improvement in attendance occurs, management may proceed with a temporary suspension without pay. The intention to suspend should be confirmed in writing with details of the start and end dates. A copy of the letter of suspension should be sent to the employeeâs representative (if applicable). Stage 5: Termination of Employment This is the final stage in the disciplinary process whereby the employee is dismissed for an inability to comply with the companyâs requirements for attendance at work. Dismissal can only take place with the written authorization of a senior manager and HR.The letter calling the employee in will again include advice on representation and will outline the absence record. The employee should be advised that, as a result of the interview, he or she may be dismissed for incapability to perform work duties. Again, the company doctor may have to be consulted if any new information is forthcoming in regard to the employeeâs health or capacity for work.If a decision is made to dismiss on the basis of capability, a copy of the letter of dismissal should be sent to the employeeâs representative (if appropriate). The employee may have the right to appeal against the dismissal. The appeal should be in line with the companyâs disciplinary procedures. Challenges in Managing Absenteeism Be aware that supervisors are often uncomfortable or unwilling to report on those who have exceeded acceptable levels of absenteeism. Because of the many pressures already on supervisors, the consistent implementation of absenteeism policies is not always their top priority. It is important to try to take the subjectivity out of managing absenteeism and to ensure that all employees are treated the same. It is essential to be consistent, persistent, and fair to all. When the absence is not addressed or addressed in an inconsistent manner, lower morale can result. The majority of employees will appreciate policies and programs that are facilitative, rather than punitive. Stringent or punitive measures that force employees to come to work can result in employees that they become absent while at work. They do as little as possible and resist any effort to get them to do more. Other programs should be implemented that help employees be present at work, such as flexible work scheduling, job sharing, attendance awards, and wellness programs. - Stefanie Yorges is Leadership Consultant at Leading Higher and specializes in helping overwhelmed leaders win at work and succeed in life.

More than one in three people worked as freelancers last year More than one in three people worked as freelancers last year Freelancing: there are just as many reasons to do it (more control over your life!) as there are not to do it (taxes, buying your own healthcare, instability). Upwork and the Freelancers Union just released its fifth annual âFreelancing in Americaâ study, commissioning Edelman Intelligent to survey 6,000 working adults (one-third of them freelancers). The most salient finding is how the freelance workforce has grown. Now 56.7 million people are considered freelancers, which means the freelance workforce has grown by 3.7 million since 2014. More than one in three (35%) Americans worked for themselves this year.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Not everyone freelances full-timeNot everyone is freelancing full-time, however. Respondents said that 50% were freelancing consistently, while the other 50% said that their freelancing was intermittent to regular. And 42% percent wo rked for themselves less than weekly. However, 60% of people who left a job to freelance full time said they now earned more. The main reasons that people who were full-time freelance made the jump were being their own boss, schedule flexibility, working from where they wanted, avoiding office politics, to have a schedule that allowed them to pursue their passions outside of work, and to be able to choose their own projects.More are choosing to freelanceWhile itâs true that some people are pushed into freelancing due to layoffs or a poor economy, the study found that over the last five years, people are increasingly choosing to freelance. When survey respondents were asked if they started freelancing out of choice or necessity, 61% of freelancers said choice. Thatâs a significant contrast from 2014 when respondents answered âchoiceâ by only 53%.Half (51%) of freelancers say no amount of cash would convince them to take a regular job. And 42% of freelancers say that that type o f work provides them with necessary flexibility that theyâre unable to get from a regular employer but sorely need â" things like health issues and childcare.Still, itâs not all making your hours and working from home. âFreelancers are the backbone of our economy, but this crucial segment of Americaâs workforce faces unique challenges, including access to affordable healthcare and workforce development training to update skills in a competitive environment,â said Caitlin Pearce, executive director of the Freelancers Union.Freelancers proactive on trainingTraining is something that freelancers pay attention to, lest they fall behind those working out of the home office. However, its cost keeps out 53% of them from participating â" usually because they have to pay for any training themselves, instead of having their work ante up. Still, 70% of full-time freelancers participated in skills training in the last six months, in comparison to 49% of full-time workers who are not freelancers.Instead of Sunday-night scaries, tax and insurance anxietyWhile freelancers seem happy to be where they are and see an upward trajectory both career-wise and financially in being self-employed, they did reveal specific apprehensions that come with working for yourself. Sixty-three percent felt anxious about the things they had to manage themselves, like money, taxes, and insurance. An additional 63% worried about the unpredictable nature of their work. And about half (53%) found that freelancing could be isolating.
